The teacher mentor program at Lisle School District #202 was developed in order to assist new teachers to the district in their transition from either teacher education programs or as experienced teachers into the Lisle school district. The purpose of the mentoring program is to speed up the learning of a new job skill and reduce the stress of this transition, attracting new staff in a very competitive recruiting environment, and improving instructional performance through modeling by a top performer. Retaining excellent veteran staff and promoting the socialization of new staff into the school "family", values and traditions. The mentoring program is a two-year program in which new teachers to the district are paired with veteran teachers. A four day orientation program is required for all new teachers and a two day orientation program is required of all second year teachers. The mentor and protégé meet on a regular basis throughout the two-year cycle. Mentors and protégés also meet as a group on a quarterly basis in order to discuss common concerns and accomplishments. Protégés are required to attend 4 after-school workshops designed specifically for them during the first year and two workshops during the second year. Protégés are required to observe veteran teachers and be peer coached four times a year in each of the two years.
